MFL
Intent
Our intent in Languages is to immerse the children in another language and culture to encourage them to become lifelong language learners.
The focus language at Dame Dorothy Primary School is French, although, the choice of language is secondary to the nurturing of confidence, enthusiasm and a love of languages. Through active and practical teaching sessions we aim to facilitate the development of effective and transferrable language learning, knowledge and skills that will provide a gateway to the wider world.
Implementation
Our Language curriculum is provided by an online resource. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. The scheme is engaging and encourages children to develop confidence to speak in a different language. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. Children record their work in French books, which will be passed progressively from year to year.
As we do not have a specialist Language teacher in school. French is delivered whilst class teachers have their PPA time. We use a scheme of work from Twinkl – Planit French, which provides IWB resources which also supports correct pronunciation.
Impact
The learning challenges used, to plan and teach Languages, ensure that children are accessing work at age related expectations, with regular opportunities to be challenged through higher-level objectives. Children are assessed in line with the school assessment procedures. This information is recorded and monitored by the subject manager through:
- Pupil voice
- End of unit post tasks
- Assess the end of year to assure children are achieving our required end point
