Headteacher

Welcome to Dame Dorothy Primary School. I have had the privilege of being head teacher since 2009 in our family orientated school at the heart of the St Peter’s ward of northern Sunderland.

This school is based upon a caring and nurturing ethos that serves a diverse catchment of families. We pride ourselves on being a key part of the local community supporting our families both in and outside of school.

We have high expectations for all our pupils in their academic work and behaviour. External examination results, prior to Covid, have been strong at all key stage phases and are evidence of the good teaching and hard-working children we have at Dame Dorothy.

Our curriculum is an exciting one that takes full advantage of our rich locality and locations further afield through a skills-based approach to learning. Particular highlights are visits to Lambton Estate and Broom House farm.

Music, PE and technology are at the core of our relentless drive to provide children with life enhancing experiences. All children in key stage 2 have the opportunity to learn new instruments and develop a passion for music. We are an active school promoting daily exercise and a healthy lifestyle through our daily mile, lunchtime activities and extended school offer. In addition, we make the best use of our PE funding to provide quality PE delivery and sporting competition. Our commitment to IT allows children access to reliable hardware to prepare them for an ever-changing technological world.

We have an amazing EYFS setting with access to a large outdoor area to promote learning outdoors as well as in the classroom. Our nursery offers an excellent start to your child’s education.

I am immensely proud of our school and the great work that happens here in partnership with families, staff and governors.
